Vintage Victoria Magazine | The Spirit of Katherine Hepburn

Vintage Victoria Magazine | August 1991

Apologies for my long absence from this blog. I wonder sometimes if anyone still reads this thing or blogs in general. Well, little old blogs like mine anyway that are never updated. So perhaps not. Anyhow, I’ve returned with another ode to my love for vintage Victoria magazine! I thought maybe I will do this every month and feature that month’s issue from a different year. So, since we are in August, this is the August 1991 issue featuring the most lovely editorial “A Toast to the Spirit of Katharine Hepburn”…

This beautiful story is photographed by Tom Hooper and features actual antique clothing in the photographs. I love that in so many of Victoria’s editorials they use authentic vintage clothing to tell a tale. Isn’t the Edwardian chemise and petticoat featured in these photos just lovely?

There are so many more photos in this editorial including Katharine Hepburn’s recollections from filming The African Queen with Humphrey Bogart. But you’ll just have to go find yourself this issue to see all the beautiful imagery! This August vintage issue of Victoria Magazine also has other delightful stories about sisters who started a flower farm, a feature on Louis Vuitton luggage and a bit of the history behind them, and a very sweet story (and beautiful photos!) of gardens shared by friends.

Oh, vintage Victoria…you never fail to make my heart go all a flutter. You’re so wonderful!

Vintage Victoria Magazine | On A Gilded Afternoon

Vintage Victoria Magazine | July 1990 and July 1993

If you’ve been reading my blog for a bit now, it will not be new news to you that I adore Victoria magazine. Vintage Victoria magazine when the magazine was under the leadership of Nancy Lindemeyer. The two issues I am featuring are two vintage July issues.

The July 1990 Victoria issue is one of my favorites! This issue has so many beautiful things to look at and it features an editorial about the Art Deco Society in California hosting their 1920s event, “A Gatsby Summer Affair” which is still running! Gatsby Summer Afternoon is hosted every year, and this year is the 32nd year the party has been raging on.

Last year, my friends and I attended the New Deal Weekend hosted by Julie of Fab Gabs Vintage and we had such enormous fun! This year the party is being hosted in Seattle which I am so sad to be missing. Perhaps next year! You can see our photos from last year’s event in this blog post: 1920s & 1930s Prohibition Picnic at Historic Overlook House

The other July issue featured is July 1993. I’ll say it isn’t one of my favorite issues since there aren’t a lot of fashions in it. But there is a wonderful feature on Margaret Howell (photo above) and the style and branding looks slightly different than the current look. I love seeing how brands grow and change.

Now, I know it’s from the 1990s… but you cannot deny how absolutely beautiful this magazine is!

In Which I Profess My Love for Victoria Magazine

vintagevictoriamagazine

Do you follow Adored Vintage on Instagram? If you do, it will be of no surprise to you that I LOVE, absolutely ADORE vintage Victoria magazine. I don’t even remember how I came to know about Victoria magazine. I know it is still in circulation, but I first found out about the vintage issues before I even knew there was a current print.

Now, perhaps I am biased, but I just really don’t care as much for the new print. But the issues from the 1980s and early to mid 90s. Oh they captivate my heart so! It is so very rare for me now to just want to pour over a magazine over and over again and the first volumes of Victoria magazine I escape to time and time again.

The photography by Toshi Otsuki renders me speechless. There is a dreamlike nostalgia about them. As if you’ve been there before and somehow someone was able to capture the beauty you experienced better than your own eyes.

Isn’t this chocolate cake dusted with powdered sugar just the sweetest? I can’t wait to give this a try for our next party! Just simply use an antique tablecloth to create beautiful patterns!

Many of the features in the magazine are so in line with what I love sometimes I believe this magazine was made just for me. Well not SOLELY for ME, but you know, as if someone went into my brain and decided to make a magazine all about the things I love, dream to do, and appreciate.

The fashion and clothes depicted in the magazine almost always have a romantic idyllic vintage feel. While some outfits seem quite dated, the overall feeling is still very poignant to me and the vintage clothes I like to wear and stock in my shop.

I am so absolutely smitten with both of these Autumn ensembles! I recently just received the Fall 2015 J. Peterman catalog and there is a sweater coat similar to the one depicted here that I want.

Oh my goodness doesn’t this last image just look exactly like something I would take a photo of? Even down to the little bits of flowers tucked in with the dress. It just amazes me how much this magazine speaks to my core!

So now of course after you have become mesmerized by these pages I am going to send you to some other websites you may enjoy… and I will be posting more peeks into my vintage Victoria magazine collection at later times!
